Security Consultants IJA have been advising on the security systems design and implementation for the Museum's most significant expansion project since the Museum moved to South Kensington in 1881.
The new 8-storey, £78 million landmark building and its futuristic cocoon structure opened its doors to the general public in September and houses 17 million insect specimens and 3 million plant specimens. In addition to the numerous exhibits, the Darwin Centre is also a major scientific research unit with some 350 museum staff and scientists working in purpose built laboratories at the Centre.
Providing the security for such an open and public institution whilst ensuring the safety and security of ongoing research and exhibits is no small task. Speaking about the collaboration with Museum staff, Nick Johnson, Business Development Manager said; " advising on the security design for a complex and futuristic building that required a state of the art security system to protect the irreplaceable collections and science laboratories from security breach was a great challenge. We are immensely proud to be associated with such an iconic and magnificent new building and hope the new Centre will be enjoyed by many future generations of museum visitors and scientists to come."
